For some reason I think perhaps German but am really not sure

The wood itself seems like a piece of driftwood

which bring a big extra layer of love to whatever photograph one might put them

I especially love the sad face of the headache plagued man and the tattoo like text on the hands pointing to the pain. More or less pristine condition, crisp and clean and with no real signs of use. 5 1 2" x 2 3 4" with flap open. 1940s or 50s I would guess.
