Black silk was by far the most common for 'whalebone bonnets', or boned bonnets, but other colors such as white and green were sometimes seen. The shape and style of this bonnet with its boned brim is closely based on the example owned by the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation, Accession # 1993. 335, as well as period images and descriptions.
