the Victoria Cross may be awarded to all ranks of the services and civilians for gallantry in the presence of the enemy

it was extended to officers of the RAF for acts of gallantry on the ground and during World War One there was provision made for officers of the Royal Naval Division and Royal Marines

It is at a level below the Conspicuous Gallantry Cross and is at the equivalent level to the Distinguished Service Cross (for exemplary gallantry at sea) and the Military Cross (for exemplary gallantry on land)

Insitutued in 1854 this medal continued with the same young head of Queen Victoria on the obverse for 41 years. A total of 24 four clasps were issued to this medal and the maximum number of clasps know to one medal is seven. Originally issued in silver to all ranks, it was awarded in bronze from 1885 to native support personnel such as bearers, sweepers and drivers.
